The UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is a digital travel permit required for visitors who do not need a visa to enter the United Kingdom. It costs approximately £20, is valid for multiple journeys over two years, and lets you stay for up to six months per visit.

Who Needs an ETA

The ETA requirement applies to all visa-exempt foreign nationals—including citizens of the United States, Canada, Australia, and the European Union. It is also required for those transiting through the UK if they pass through passport control.

Exceptions:

  • British and Irish citizens (including dual citizens)
  • Individuals who already hold a UK visa
  • Legal residents of the UK or the Republic of Ireland

How to Apply

Applications are usually processed within three working days and are digitally linked to your passport.
