Northrop Grumman Mission Systems has an opening for an Aeronautical Engineer to join our Flight Test team. This position will be located in Baltimore, MD.

The Aeronautical Engineer will become a member of a unique organization within Northrop Grumman that provides the venue to flexibly showcase discriminating capabilities by taking Company products from the lab to the airborne environment on a fleet of highly modified testbed aircraft. The business area is focused on the design, analysis, modification, integration, ground and flight testing, and airworthiness certification of airborne surveillance and communication technologies onto manned and unmanned flying testbed aircraft.

The Aeronautical Engineer will be the department’s aerodynamic subject matter expert and will design and analyze aerodynamic modifications for our flying test bed aircraft fleet. The Candidate will work closely with a multi-disciplined team comprised of other Engineers, Pilots, Maintainers and Inspectors throughout the entire lifecycle of the air vehicle modification programs. The Candidate will also be a principal department interface with large Aeronautical Engineering staffing at other Northrop Grumman sectors and campuses.

The Aeronautical Engineer must be capable of leading and mentoring team members from other disciplines on aerodynamic design and analysis techniques and best practices related to air vehicle modification and configuration design. A strong background in the development of conceptual/preliminary aircraft design and aircraft modification is paramount, including configuration design, air vehicle integration and preliminary outer mold line surface design and loft. In addition, She/He should be well versed in core Flight Science disciplines including aerodynamics, performance, propulsion, stability and control, CFD, and mass properties. The Engineer will be expected to review a variety of data sources, assess an aerodynamic risk level, prepare briefings and communicate results both internally to Flight Test Department personnel during design and readiness reviews as well as externally to various Customers' Airworthiness Subject Matter Experts.

 

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • • Performing and leading aerodynamic design and analysis activities for air vehicle modifications
  • • Using an array of analysis tools ranging from low order methods to processing, interrogating and analyzing high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics simulations
  • • Developing aerodynamic loads to be used by Loads & Dynamics Engineers and Structural Analysts
  • • Supporting flight and ground test activities, including identifying test instrumentation and test data reduction and analysis
  • • Analyzing, investigating, and resolving non-routine problems
  • • Reviewing and preparing flight test plans and reports
  • • Assessing effects of modifications on aircraft performance and flying qualities, including added drag on takeoff and climb performance and effects on aircraft stability and control

The successful Candidate will be a self-starter, a team player, and possess the ability to research and effectively resolve technical issues both independently and as part of a large multi-disciplined team. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as interpersonal skills in order to coordinate with a variety of disciplines is also essential. Position also requires the ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and adapt quickly to frequently changing requirements.

This job may be filled as a Principal Aeronautical Engineer or a Senior Principal Aeronautical Engineer depending on the qualifications below.

 Basic Qualifications for a Principal Aeronautical Engineer:

  • • Bachelor's of Science degree or higher from an accredited university in Aerospace, Aeronautical, Mechanical engineering or related STEM area with 5 years of relevant experience or 3 years of relevant experience with an MS degree
  • • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance (This requires US Citizenship.)
  • • Knowledge of and familiarity with Federal Aviation Administration aircraft certification requirements
  • • Experience in processing aerodynamic data from analytical tools including CFD (computational fluid dynamics) and/or wind tunnel testing
  • • Ability and experience in creating detailed 3D CAD models using Siemens NX or similar software
  • • Experience using a CFD code (computational fluid dynamics) - e.g. panel code, vortex lattice, DATCOM

 Basic Qualifications for a Senior Principal Aeronautical Engineer:

  • • Bachelor's of Science degree or higher from an accredited university in Aerospace, Aeronautical, Mechanical engineering or related STEM area with 9 years of relevant experience or 7 years of relevant experience with an MS degree
  • • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance (This requires US Citizenship.)
  • • Knowledge of and familiarity with Federal Aviation Administration aircraft certification requirements
  • • Experience in processing aerodynamic data from analytical tools including CFD and/or wind tunnel testing
  • • Ability and experience in creating detailed 3D CAD models using Siemens NX or similar software
  • • Experience using a CFD code (computational fluid dynamics) - e.g. panel code, vortex lattice, DATCOM

Preferred Qualifications:

  • • Master's of Science or Master's of Engineering degree from an accredited university in Aerospace, Aeronautical, Mechanical engineering or related STEM area
  • • Experience performing aerodynamic analysis and interpreting results for the purpose of stability and control, performance predictions, loads & dynamics, engine inlet wake ingestion and air data impacts
  • • Experience in planning and executing wind tunnel tests
  • • Experience in aeroelasticity and flutter analysis
  • • Knowledge of and familiarity with MIL-HDBK-516 requirements
  • • Current FAA Flight Analyst Designated Engineering Representative (DER)
  • • Active Secret security clearance or higher clearance and ability to obtain SAP clearance
  • • Experience with envelope expansion flight test planning, interpreting flight test results

POSITION DESCRIPTION 

TITLE: Test Pilot / CONUS position / MUST HAVE TOP SECRET CLEARANCE

REPORTS TO: Program Manager  

WORK EXPERIENCE: 

Graduate of a SETP recognized Test Pilot School (TPS) or have achieved SETP member status with at least 10 years of flight test experience (required).

Last flight as pilot in command within the previous 12 months (required).

MQ-9 MCE and/or LR experience (preferred).

 

EDUCATION/TRAINING:
Bachelor’s Degree (Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics) or Master’s Degree (any Engineering field) with a minimum GPA of 3.0; Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) commercial pilot license with instrument rating (required).  

REQUIREMENTS: Current FAA Class II Medical Certificate, US Citizen, Current Top Secret Security Clearance (required) 

Travel: May be required to travel to other sites to perform duties. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Position Summary: Responsible for coordination of customer flight test support requirements and aircraft operation to ensure flight safety and success. Applies extensive knowledge and experience of flight test operations to provide test planning, training and evaluation, pre-flight planning, flight briefings, post-flight briefings, and post-flight test analysis and reports. Knowledgeable of aviation flight operations as well as instructional procedures and techniques. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Test and evaluate capabilities of new equipment and propriety of new procedures. 

Conduct test (Acceptance Test and Developmental Test) and normal operations in accordance
with established test cards, published flight manuals, checklists, technical orders, instructions and other approved manuals as provided by the manufacturer.  

Test Planning: Review test plans, test cards, and other documentation for ground and flight
test events and provide feedback to Flight Test Engineer (FTE) as required. 

Attend and participate in Test Plan Working Groups (TPWGs), Technical Interchange
Meetings (TIMs), Test Kickoff Meetings, Test Readiness Reviews (TRRs), Safety Review Boards (SRBs), and Technical Review Boards (TRBs). 

Support FTE in execution of test projects with elevated risk (greater than Low). 

Pre-flight Planning: Coordinate customer flight support requirements and develop valid
mission plans to include map analysis for mission route selection including terrain evaluation; communications planning; compliance with customer, FAA, ICAO, and host nation regulations; developing and filing flight plans; weather evaluation; fuel requirements, mission risk assessment; crew assignments; pre-flight briefing and safety of flight evaluation.

Perform pre-flight and in-flight mission planning activities in accordance with unified combatant command and theater rules of engagement. Must understand tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) for friendly and enemy Air Order Battle (AOB) assets. 

Conduct all phases of safe ground and flight operations, including pre-flight, ground
checks, launch, normal flight, emergency flight, recovery, and post-flight. 

Participate in post-flight debriefing to determine mission accomplishments and potential procedural development. 

Submit T.O. change requests and Deficiency Reports (DR) identified during ground and flight test operations. 

Operate mission planning ancillary equipment to initialize information for download to airborne mission systems.  

Receive, interpret, extract, and disseminate relevant ATO, Airspace Control Order (ACO) and SPINs information.  

Obtain and maintain professional certifications required to pilot/operate aircraft to include appropriate difference training and qualification on new aircraft.

Accurately track and accomplish currency requirements, annual evaluations/training events, go/no-go Flight Crew Information File items, and safety briefings. 

Conduct initial, qualification, upgrade and continuation training for mission crew members.  

Perform training, planning, standardization and evaluation, and other staff duty functions.  

Perform staff assistance visits to subordinate units.  

Perform other duties as assigned.

  3. Minimum of 3-5 years experience as a Rotary Wing experimental test pilot.
  4. Class II FAA medical or equivalent.
  5. Fluent in English.
  6. Proficient in Microsoft Office products.

Desired Education, Training & Experience Criteria:

  1. Ten years of Rotary Wing flight test experience.
  2. Master’s Degree in Engineering, or field closely related to flight testing (or significant equivalent experience).
  3. Previous test pilot school instructional experience.
  4. Test experience with Civil Certification, Radar, EO/IR & Comm/Nav systems.
  5. FAA Commercial Pilot License; Rotorcraft (Helicopter), Instrument & CFI ratings.
  6. EASA Category I Test Pilot rating & Flight Test Instructor rating.
  7. FAA Commercial Pilot License; Airplane (Single-Engine & Multi-Engine Land).
  8. NVG or Helmet Mounted Display experience.
