Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking a Test Pilot (level 5) to support our Developmental Engineering Flight Test Program in Linthicum, MD.

 

The responsibilities of the Test Pilot 5 include:

- Manages engineering integration of sensor programs onto test bed aircraft

- Oversees appropriate airworthiness approval process for widely varying aircraft configurations

- Completes test planning and appropriate risk management processes for flight test execution

- Operates various models of FAA Experimental, Research and Development test aircraft during both Civil Aircraft Operations and Public Aircraft Operations

- May conduct military utility demonstration flights with customers, government officials or other personnel

Basic Qualifications:

  • •Bachelor's degree with 14 years of relevant professional/military experience - OR - a Master's degree with 12 years of relevant professional/military experience
  • •Pilot graduate (long-course) of a military test pilot school (USNTPS, USAFTPS, ETPS or EPNER)
  • •Minimum three years of test pilot experience in developmental and/or operational flight test
  • •FAA Commercial Multi-Engine Land pilot certificate without a centerline thrust restriction
  • •FAA Second Class Medical
  • •Minimum 1500 hours First Pilot (USN/USMC) or Primary (USAF) flight time in turbojet, turbofan or turboprop aircraft
  • •Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance. US citizenship is required.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • •Master's degree in engineering or related technical discipline
  • •FAA Airline Transport Rating (ATP)
  • •Previous experience in aircraft modifications, configuration and control and technical/operational review boards
  • •Familiar with government flight test organizations, ranges, and processes
  • •Top Secret security clearance within the past two years
  • •Technically and operationally familiar with airborne radar systems
  • •FAA type ratings and experience in multi-engine, non-centerline thrust aircraft

Principal/Senior Principal Aeronautical Engineer - Flight Test

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems has an opening for an Aeronautical Engineer to join our Flight Test team. This position will be located in Baltimore, MD.

The Aeronautical Engineer will become a member of a unique organization within Northrop Grumman that provides the venue to flexibly showcase discriminating capabilities by taking Company products from the lab to the airborne environment on a fleet of highly modified testbed aircraft. The business area is focused on the design, analysis, modification, integration, ground and flight testing, and airworthiness certification of airborne surveillance and communication technologies onto manned and unmanned flying testbed aircraft.

The Aeronautical Engineer will be the department’s aerodynamic subject matter expert and will design and analyze aerodynamic modifications for our flying test bed aircraft fleet. The Candidate will work closely with a multi-disciplined team comprised of other Engineers, Pilots, Maintainers and Inspectors throughout the entire lifecycle of the air vehicle modification programs. The Candidate will also be a principal department interface with large Aeronautical Engineering staffing at other Northrop Grumman sectors and campuses.

The Aeronautical Engineer must be capable of leading and mentoring team members from other disciplines on aerodynamic design and analysis techniques and best practices related to air vehicle modification and configuration design. A strong background in the development of conceptual/preliminary aircraft design and aircraft modification is paramount, including configuration design, air vehicle integration and preliminary outer mold line surface design and loft. In addition, She/He should be well versed in core Flight Science disciplines including aerodynamics, performance, propulsion, stability and control, CFD, and mass properties. The Engineer will be expected to review a variety of data sources, assess an aerodynamic risk level, prepare briefings and communicate results both internally to Flight Test Department personnel during design and readiness reviews as well as externally to various Customers' Airworthiness Subject Matter Experts.

 

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • • Performing and leading aerodynamic design and analysis activities for air vehicle modifications
  • • Using an array of analysis tools ranging from low order methods to processing, interrogating and analyzing high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics simulations
  • • Developing aerodynamic loads to be used by Loads & Dynamics Engineers and Structural Analysts
  • • Supporting flight and ground test activities, including identifying test instrumentation and test data reduction and analysis
  • • Analyzing, investigating, and resolving non-routine problems
  • • Reviewing and preparing flight test plans and reports
  • • Assessing effects of modifications on aircraft performance and flying qualities, including added drag on takeoff and climb performance and effects on aircraft stability and control

The successful Candidate will be a self-starter, a team player, and possess the ability to research and effectively resolve technical issues both independently and as part of a large multi-disciplined team. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as interpersonal skills in order to coordinate with a variety of disciplines is also essential. Position also requires the ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and adapt quickly to frequently changing requirements.

This job may be filled as a Principal Aeronautical Engineer or a Senior Principal Aeronautical Engineer depending on the qualifications below.

  • • Bachelor's of Science degree or higher from an accredited university in Aerospace, Aeronautical, Mechanical engineering or related STEM area with 5 years of relevant experience or 3 years of relevant experience with an MS degree
  • • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance (This requires US Citizenship.)
  • • Knowledge of and familiarity with Federal Aviation Administration aircraft certification requirements
  • • Experience in processing aerodynamic data from analytical tools including CFD (computational fluid dynamics) and/or wind tunnel testing
  • • Ability and experience in creating detailed 3D CAD models using Siemens NX or similar software
  • • Experience using a CFD code (computational fluid dynamics) - e.g. panel code, vortex lattice, DATCOM

 Basic Qualifications for a Senior Principal Aeronautical Engineer:

  • • Bachelor's of Science degree or higher from an accredited university in Aerospace, Aeronautical, Mechanical engineering or related STEM area with 9 years of relevant experience or 7 years of relevant experience with an MS degree
  • • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance (This requires US Citizenship.)
  • • Knowledge of and familiarity with Federal Aviation Administration aircraft certification requirements
  • • Experience in processing aerodynamic data from analytical tools including CFD and/or wind tunnel testing
  • • Ability and experience in creating detailed 3D CAD models using Siemens NX or similar software
  • • Experience using a CFD code (computational fluid dynamics) - e.g. panel code, vortex lattice, DATCOM

Preferred Qualifications:

  • • Master's of Science or Master's of Engineering degree from an accredited university in Aerospace, Aeronautical, Mechanical engineering or related STEM area
  • • Experience performing aerodynamic analysis and interpreting results for the purpose of stability and control, performance predictions, loads & dynamics, engine inlet wake ingestion and air data impacts
  • • Experience in planning and executing wind tunnel tests
  • • Experience in aeroelasticity and flutter analysis
  • • Knowledge of and familiarity with MIL-HDBK-516 requirements
  • • Current FAA Flight Analyst Designated Engineering Representative (DER)
  • • Active Secret security clearance or higher clearance and ability to obtain SAP clearance
  • • Experience with envelope expansion flight test planning, interpreting flight test results
