This position supports tasking at the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) for the U. S. Naval Test Pilot School in Patuxent River, MD.  Candidate will serve as a Fixed Wing Flight Instructor at the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School.

Education/Experience Requirements:  Candidate must possess a Bachelor’s degree and eight years of experience.  Graduate of the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School, or equivalent military test pilot school is required.  Candidate must possess at least three years of Test Pilot experience and one year of Flight Instructor experience.  Recent experience as a U.S. Naval Test Pilot School instructor is preferred.  He/She must possess a current FAA 2ndClass Medical Certificate and possess a Federal Aviation Administration Commercial Pilot Certificate with Airplane Single Engine and Multiengine Land and Instrument Airplane ratings.  Candidate must have experience in two of the following aircraft:  T-6, F/A-18, T-38, U-1/U-6, C-12/T-44, or other multiengine turboprop.  Candidate must be capable of completing Water Survival and Aviation Physiology Training as required by OPNAVINST 3710.7 series.

Experimental Test Pilot Needed

EXPERIMENTAL TEST PILOT  – Texas – Immediate Full-time Opening – Competitive Salary + Benefits             

 

POSITION SUMMARY

Plan, direct and conduct helicopter ground and flight production and certification test projects, both on and off-site per company objectives.  Direct and conduct test data acquisition and data reduction, and demonstration/compliance with test objectives.  Perform weight and balance analysis and tracking of customer helicopter configurations.  Prepare helicopter performance analysis in support of commercial and government programs.  Apply engine math model and helicopter performance models to prepare performance predictions.  Prepare Flight Manual Supplements for optional equipment.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

1.       Plan, schedule, and conduct ground and flight tests according to company policy and engineering procedures.  Determine test parameters and required test equipment.  Prepare statements of work to comply with projects requirements for flight-testing.  Project Engineer responsible for coordinating mechanical and avionics engineering customer requirements.  Require frequent technical contacts with vendors and customers. 

2.       Direct activities of test team (Shop/Instrumentation Support/Engineering).  Coordinate flight test program with certification manager to insure compliance with FAA FAR’s, DAS Staff member or US military qualification requirements.

3.       Conduct helicopter performance and weight and balance analysis in support of commercial and government proposals and related studies. Perform analyses of competitive systems for use in comparison studies and management decision documents.  Conduct weight and balance estimates and track design projects to insure that Weight Control Procedures are followed.  Prepare weight and balance reports as required for ongoing commercial programs and proposals.

4.       Perform analysis of internal/external noise and vibration data for the entire American Eurocopter product line. 

5.       Perform function check of aircraft and systems to assure readiness for flight, and prepare/review production test procedures for completeness and accuracy.  Familiarize self with new or modified systems, instrumentation, or other equipment installed on the aircraft.

6.       Prepare monthly flight log and reports.  Ensure compliance with FAA and other regulations in all Engineering assignments.  Prepare required pre-flight and post-flight documentation and reports, documents significant occurrences.  Coordinate results of Flight Test with appropriate Quality Assurance, Flight Line, and Engineering Personnel.

7.       Requires ability to communicate effectively verbally and in written form with internal and external customers.  Able to read and interpret various types of technical documentation and data.

8.       Requires use of PC computer and associated hardware and software.

9.       Requires FAA Second (2nd) Class Medical Examination or better.

10.   Must be in good physical condition with height/weight proportionate.

11.   Requires the ability to speak and hear clearly.

12.   Able to compose written documentation and to read and interpret various types of technical drawings, data, and specifications.

13.   Able to move about freely in the area of moving aircraft.

14.   Able to successfully operate company aircraft; and to maintain required FAA certificate and medical requirements.

15.   Able to travel away from facility.

16.   This position is not intended to be all-inclusive and the employee will also perform other task as assigned.  This position reports to the Director of Operations.

 

 

Ten years experience in the field of engineering preferably in aerospace or mechanical.   Requires a minimum of ten years flight experience and a minimum of 3500 hours total times with 2000 hours in helicopters. Requires knowledge of aircraft, aircraft systems, aerodynamics, and flight characteristics of aircraft, FAA regulations, and other fields relating to conduct of flight test programs. Candidate must also have the following experience:

 

  • Experience with stress and vibration measurements
  • Experience in helicopter handling qualities testing
  • Experience of managing a flight test program involving many organizations
  • A profile which will enable him to impose his opinions in a complex program scenario
  • Experience (on board) of flight test of light / medium helicopters
  • Experience of range firings
  • Experience of weapon systems integration and test
  • Knowledge of the US military certification and qualification process

Requires a Bachelors Degree or better.  Successful candidate must be a full course graduate a recognized test pilot school (EPNER, Navy Test Pilot School, Edwards, or National Test Pilot School).  Must posses a FAA commercial pilots license, with helicopter rating and instrument-helicopter ratings.

Flight Test Engineer and Flight Test Coordinator - MIT Lincoln Laboratory

The candidate will plan local and deployed flight tests of infrared (IR) and radar (RF) systems, including state-of-the-art seekers and instrumentation-grade truth sensors. The candidate will help define test objectives, develop and write flight test plans, identify safety hazards and mitigation plans, and formulate detailed mission cards for execution by pilots and test system operators. The candidate will brief test participants and direct missions from test range control rooms when available. The candidate will also coordinate all deployment logistics and test range resource usage for bi-annual deployments lasting up to six weeks. The candidate will develop, publish, and monitor long and short range aircraft activity schedules to coordinate maintenance, flight test, ground test, integration, and modification activities. The candidate will plan and document aircraft modifications according to USAF and FAA regulations. The candidate will work as part of a small team to accomplish long term goals.

Requirements:

Masters degree in engineering, physics, or mathematics. At least 5 years experience in planning and conducting developmental flight tests. In lieu of an MS degree, a BS with 6-7 years of directly related experience will be considered.

Desired Skills:

Experience: Aircraft modifications, including external stores certification desired. Graduation from a recognized test pilot/engineer curriculum desired. Experience in planning aircraft deployments desired. Experience with radar, RF, and electro-optical seekers and hardware used in collection and calibration of data from these systems desired. Field test experience at one or more DoD test ranges a plus. Knowledge of automated design tools (AutoCAD, etc), software programming/engineering, experience with analysis tools such as MATLAB is a plus. Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team, imitative and problem solving skills, and effective oral and written communication skills are essential.
