Position Summary

Stratolaunch is a technology accelerator that engineers operationally realistic testing at Mach 5+. Our air-launched, Talon testbeds are reusable, cost-effective platforms that enable routine access to the hypersonic environment. We deliver flight data critical to validating system performance and achieving rapid technology deployment. Together with our customers, we drive innovations that are imperative to advancing national security.

As a Test Pilot on the Stratolaunch team, you will have the opportunity to accomplish new milestones in aviation. You will provide comprehensive flight test technical support for experimental and developmental aircraft and payload systems development. You will participate in flight test in either the Stratolaunch Model 351 Carrier Aircraft, the world’s largest wingspan aircraft, or the 747-400 Carrier Aircraft. You should possess extensive experience in developmental flight test, and sound judgment to plan and accomplish program goals safely and effectively. You must establish and maintain effective relationships with colleagues on a small, agile design-to-flight team. Tasks include planning and flying test flights as Pilot in Command (PIC) or Second in Command (SIC); supporting ground tests as aircrew or Test Conductor; preparing system test plans and flight test cards; participating in engineering design reviews, simulator evaluations, technical and safety reviews, and flight briefings; drafting flight manual and operational guidance and documenting test results. As a key member of the Flight Operations team, you will have an essential role in meeting all Flight Operations objectives. You will be challenged with bringing unique and complex aircraft from development stage to operational use and proving capabilities for high-speed vehicle launch.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as PIC/SIC for the experimental Model 351 Carrier Aircraft and/or the experimental 747-400, as well as other aircraft to be used for chase and training missions.
  • Write flight test plans, test cards, flight reports, and final test reports
  • Lead and/or participate in system design and design reviews
  • Develop test strategies, test plans and test procedures for aircraft and components
  • Lead and/or participate in ground and flight test events as test crew member or Test Conductor
  • Participate in control room operations as Mission Director or training officer, as required
  • Author and/or update Pilot Operating Handbook and related guidance, to include development of normal and emergency procedures
  • Maintain flying currency and proficiency in multiple different aircraft types
  • Must be able to work in a high stress environment

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Pilot graduate of a full course test pilot school (SETP-recognized), or possess equivalent experience in developmental flight test programs
  • Minimum 1,200 hours total PIC flight time, to include at least 500 hours in turbine aircraft
  • Three years of test pilot experience on developmental flight test programs
  • FAA Commercial Multi‐Engine Land pilot certificate, without a centerline thrust restriction
  • FAA Second Class medical certificate
  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, or similar technical foundation to support aircraft design
  • Be independent and motivated; able to self‐direct and manage time effectively
  • Be able to work irregular hours and workdays, and travel periodically
  • Be knowledgeable of applicable Federal Aviation Regulations for flight operations and aircraft certification
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • United States Citizenship - ability to acquire/maintain a US security clearance
  • Must have the ability to work in cramped, confined cockpit environments in both hot and cold environments for up to 8 hours with limited movement. Must have the ability to operate cockpit flight controls with up to 150 lbs. of rudder forces, elevator forces up to 120 lbs., and aileron forces up to 90 lbs.
  • Must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as instructed, to include flight helmet, oxygen mask and backpack parachute, and have the ability to egress cockpit area up to 10 feet off the ground via rope.

HIGHLY DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • FAA Airline Transport Rating (ATP), or additional FAA type ratings and experience in multi-engine, non-centerline thrust aircraft
  • 747-400 type rating
  • Possess FAA high altitude endorsement or equivalent military training
  • Experience as pilot in heavy multi-engine turbine aircraft
  • Six years of relevant experience on developmental flight test programs
  • Experience with external stores carriage and separation flight tests
  • Master’s Degree in engineering or related technical field
  • Previous experience with advanced flight controls or autonomous aircraft development
  • Previous experience with experimental or modified aircraft, technical and safety review boards, and configuration control
  • Familiar with government flight test organizations, ranges, and procedures

  • Travel to CONUS or OCONUS test locations for extended test campaigns

    • Wisk is currently developing Generation 6, the first fully autonomous all-electric eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft) and we need a Director to lead the Flight Test & Operations team, 
    • The Flight Test & Operations team is in charge of all flight test and flight operation activities across the company and is responsible for maintaining and operating our fleet of test aircraft as well as for the creation and the execution of the flight test plans,
    • The ultimate purpose of the Flight Test  is to ensure the safe collection of flight test data to support the verification activities of the Generation 6 aircraft development program.

What you will do:

    • The Director of Flight Test and Operations (FTOP) holds responsibility and accountability for the collection of flight test data to support verification on the Gen 6 program. This includes providing instrumentation and flight test engineering support, as well as flight operations support such as aircraft management and maintenance,
    • Additionally, FTOP oversees Chief Pilot activities related to R&D operations, surrogate aircraft operation, airborne chase, and proposed Part 135 Single Pilot operations,
    • Administrative tracking of all company test pilot FAA qualifications and certifications is also within the purview of FTOP. These functions are carried out at our base of operation: KCVH Hollister, CA.
    • Grow and mentor your team as we embark on the certification of an autonomous eVTOL aircraft
    • Promote a strong safety culture and manage/understand risk in an aircraft certification environment.
    • Participate in cross-disciplinary leadership/program-level decision making 
    • Support requirements development from an operational and test perspective, feeding requirements into product development and systems engineering
    • Develop and maintain processes to support company programs
    • Manage competing priorities from multiple programs to achieve company goals
    • Provide technical and managerial oversight for flight and systems testing at all Wisk sites, setting developmental and certification test strategy, and execution approach

What you have done:

    • 15+ years of experience in flight and/or systems integration and test, including leading test planning, execution, and reporting, both in developmental and certification environments
    • Have engaged agencies relating to certification testing and means/methods of compliance.
    • Prioritizing test activities to support development and company goals
    • Experience testing and integrating complex flight control, power management, and avionics systems
    • Demonstrated ability to lead effectively in resource constrained environments

Your Challenges

  • The Test Pilot is responsible for the conduct of the entire flight.

  • Signing of the flight order, prepared and co-signed by the L-FTE, the Captain approves under DOA privilege, by delegation of the HO Flight Test, the flight conditions according to Airbus procedure.

  • The Captain is responsible for ensuring that all arrangements on the ground and in-flight have been made to conduct the flight safely and efficiently including all briefings in coordination with the l-FTE and dispatch.

  • Closely adhering to the authorized flight test plan and based on real-time flight analysis, Instrumentation issues, changing weather or aircraft serviceability, the flight test plan may be modified in flight by the responsible L-FTE with concurrence by the Captain provided it follows the authorized flight envelope and aircraft limitations.

  • Attending any post -flight technical debriefs and liaising with Engineering staff to expedite the resolution of any faults or observations found during approved test flights.

  • The Test Pilot will be required to carry out other tasks within the wider perimeter of Flight Test. This could include assistance to training Departments, external flights (such as lease-recovery, Developmental flights, and commercial events), short-term assistance to other Flight Test centers (e.g. Toulouse, Hamburg, Tianjin, Mirabel), and attending and speaking publicly at conferences.

  • Engagement with the customer during both the delivery process and dedicated customer focused activities to optimally communicate the Airbus approved positions on major industry issues and flight test matters, is a continuous job requirement.

Basic Qualifications:
• Suitable FAA Commercial Pilot (SE Land, Instrument Airplane) or Airline Transport Pilot certificate.

• Current FAA Class I or II medical certificate.

• 1,500 hours first-pilot time in a tactical aircraft.

• Graduate of a military or recognized Test Pilot School (TPS).

• Experience in the U.S. Navy CVN environment.

• Interim SECRET or higher security clearance.

• Must be willing to travel and have a valid U.S. passport.

We are looking for an experienced Senior Test Pilot to join us in testing and certifying a new class of all-electric aircraft. As a senior member of the Flight Test team, you will be working closely with other Test Pilots and Flight Test Engineers as well as cognizant systems engineers and the certification group to validate and verify a revolutionary new aircraft design. 

Wisk recognizes the challenges that the UAM industry faces with regards the certification path for our vehicles. We are taking a pragmatic approach to this task and consequently are looking for experienced flight test personnel to join our talented team to make the certification process as efficient and effective as possible. To be a member you will have displayed highly developed Safety awareness and Risk Management capabilities in previous roles and be willing to continue this behavior at Wisk.

Your role will involve using your experience to guide our flight test certification planning, identify applicable industry guidance and standards, and prepare our flight test team to conduct testing that shows compliance to the certification authorities. Leveraging your certification experience, you will develop certification plans and support the flight test documentation and process development that will be used to demonstrate Wisk’s aircraft meet certification requirements. You will support test program scheduling, participate in flight test execution as a Test Pilot, and write test reports to a standard required by certification authorities. You will also train and mentor other flight test personnel on current best practices for certifying complex aircraft systems and support writing and updating supporting documents including aircraft flight manuals and Standard Operating Procedures.

Requirements:

  • Experience conducting flight test on program pursuing FAA/TCCA/EASA Certification
  • 10+ years flight test experience as a test pilot
  • Graduate of accredited Test Pilot School, or equivalent experience
  • Capable of obtaining at least an FAA Second Class Medical certificate
  • FAA Commercial Pilot or ATP certificate (Fixed or Rotary Wing)
  • Familiarity with FAA Order 26B
  • Bachelors of Science degree in a relevant engineering or technical field 
  • Experience in Type Certification program for fixed/rotary-wing aircraft or complex systems. Highly developed understanding of civil certification requirements from initial requirements development to Entry Into Service activities.
  • DER/DAR and/or ODA experience (or equivalent from other NAA)
  • A demonstrated capability to work within the engineering organization to inform vehicle design early, rather than identifying problems later in the development process.

Desired:

  • Unmanned aircraft flight test experience
  • Electric Propulsion flight test experience
  • Both Fixed Wing and Rotary Wing pilot certificates and flight test experience

Summary: Primary duties include flying and evaluating modified aircraft for research and development (R&D) and Test Pilot training. Duties also include reporting on results and performance from flight test sorties.  Responsible for all aspects of flight test including test and safety planning, execution and reporting.

Position Responsibilities  

  • Participate in all aspects of flight testing including: handling qualities demonstration and research flights; upset recovery training flights in experimental aircraft; proposal preparation; experiment design; aircraft and systems preparation; flight test planning and implementation; data analysis, and technical report writing.
  • Regularly contribute to the development of new concepts, techniques, and standards as an expert in the field within the business group.
  • Develop solutions to complex problems, which require the regular use of ingenuity and innovation. Ensures solutions are consistent with business group and organizational objectives.
  • Perform work independently without appreciable direction. Exercise considerable latitude in determining objectives and approaches to assignments.
  • Serve as consultant to management and serve as the external spokesperson for the business group/functional organization on major matters pertaining to its policies, plans and objectives. Particapte in new business proposal preparation.

Preferred Education / Experience:

  • Recognized Test Pilot School graduate.
  • Pilot License - FAA Commercial, Multi-Engine Land, Instrument Rating.
  • Minimum 750 hours of turbine PIC time.
  • Five years progressive experience and responsibility as a test pilot in a flight-test organization.
  • Must meet eligibility requirements for a Secret Security Clearance.
  • BS in Appropriate Engineering discipline desired.
