2. Airworthiness Strategy: Establish an airworthiness strategy for the company, taking input from multiple functions within the company to develop a comprehensive strategy that balances risk with cost.

3. Improve Engineering Accountability: Work closely with the leadership of the Engineering group to ensure their teams’ focus on and compliance to airworthiness standards. Ensure all engineering teams are being held accountable to their airworthiness quality performance.

4. New Programs: Work closely with the business development and company leadership to assess the risk of selling future products and programs as FMS (Foreign Military Sale) vs. DCS (Direct Commercial Sales).

5. Customer Policies: The Airworthiness Office Director will play a very active role in shaping domestic and international customer standards and policies for airworthiness.

The ideal candidate will have the following education, work history, knowledge and skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering. Graduate of a military or civilian test pilot school or significant experience in experimental engineering and production test preferred.
  • Experience managing an airworthiness program in a military or commercial setting required.
  • Expert knowledge and experience with US Navy and US Air Force certification requirements and standards. Working knowledge of FAA and EASA certification requirements preferred.
  • Experience and knowledge with Federal Aviation Regulations and requirements, with a particular focus on national airspace regulations.
  • Experience with manned or unmanned fixed wing aircraft programs required.
  • Current or ability to obtain Secret Clearance is required.

Position Purpose:

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
1) Act as full-time safety representative/oversight provider for all Gulfstream aviation T&E activities

2) Manage and mature the Safety Management System within the T&E organization

3) Conduct periodic self-assessments and audits to ensure SMS compliance and vibrancy

4) Promote and sustain a positive safety culture as directed by company SMS policy

5) Train and educate T&E workforce on SMS, hazard analysis, and risk mitigation identification/mitigation

6) Facilitate seamless communication within flight test organization and Aviation Safety Office

7) Participate in SMS investigations, as well as aircraft incident and accident investigations

Additional Functions:
1) Develop and refine metrics to assess health of SMS

2) Participate in review boards, self assessments and audits as an independent safety advocate

3) Represent Gulfstream at conferences, symposia, and on safety committees

4) Discover and research new technologies and methods to enhance safety

Prepare Flight Test Plans, Type Inspection Authorizations, Type Inspection Reports, and Pilot Operating Handbooks. Ensure that a proper liaison is established and maintained between Engineering, Quality Assurance and Flight Test Departments.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in a Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering discipline, with continued advanced training in Flight Test Engineering, and a minimum of seven years active test pilot experience related to Stability and Control, Performance, Avionics, Mechanical Systems, and or, Powerplant Systems.

FAA certificates/ratings (commercial pilot license, multi-engine and instrument ratings), and comprehensive knowledge of aircraft design, testing and certification are necessary to perform the duties of this position. Must be able to qualify for ODA test pilot appointment.
