The "Dr. Gerry T. Morton, Jr." Technical Tour will depart the Grand Californian Hotel, Wednesday, 24 September at 8:00am to the Air Station on Camp Pendleton. The ride through Camp Pendleton will show costal Southern California as it was before development. The tour will pass by the training areas for the First Marine Division and The Infantry Training Regiment, where all ground Marines receive their advanced infantry training after Boot Camp. Along the way you will see a multitude of captured Iraqi tanks, artillery etc. One of the most interesting views will be the simulated Middle Eastern town used for in city combat training. Once at the Air Station, we will receive briefings on Marine Aviation and will have a display of Marine Helicopter aviation, Cobras, Sea Knights, the C-130J and hopefully the Osprey. Another interesting display shows the latest modification of the HUMVEE, which has evolved into something much more capable and different than most of us have ever seen. After visiting the Air Station, we will proceed to The San Luis Rey Officers Club which is historic because it’s the Officers Club for the First Marine Division that initially took the fight to the Japanese at Guadalcanal during the Second World War. Still standing on the route is the original Ranch House that was a private Spanish land grant and was subsequently obtained by the Marine Corps before WW II. Traditionally, it is where the Base Commanding General lives. When you arrive at The San Luis Rey Club, a buffet lunch will be set up so that you can stretch your legs, mingle end enjoy the buffet. On the return back to the hotel, you will take a different route which will take you by the LCASS (an amphibious air cushion vehicle) facility and all the various beach training areas.
